Summary A general technique for solving a large class of well‐posed inverse eigenvalue problems is illustrated by means of a specific example. The example considered consists in reconstructing the coefficients p(x) and q(x) associated with the eigenvalue problem u(4)‐(pu′ )′+ qu =λ u from a knowledge of three spectra.
