Summary Field distributions and surface effects of two‐dimensional conductivity inhomogeneities are investigated. Inhomogeneities of different thicknesses at the Earth's surface and also inhomogeneities of fixed sizes but at various depths are considered. A numerical method is used to solve the differential equations and boundary conditions for the two‐dimensional models. The surface variations of the various components are compared for the different dimensions and overburden depths. Important differences are found in the behaviour of the apparent resistivities calculated for H and E polarizations of the applied field.
