Summary Electromagnetic induction in a two‐dimensional two‐layered earth model with a general layer contact topography is considered. The general boundary conditions are determined and a numerical method is used to solve the differential equations and boundary conditions for a particular model. An asymmetric effect which displaces the surface anomalies relative to the actual anomalies is observed when a net step structure across the region is encountered.
