Summary It is shown that significant anhysteretic moments may be induced in red sandstones, even in the absence of a steady field, if the alternating field is distorted by a second harmonic. The equivalent steady field that would need to be applied to induce moments of this magnitude is estimated and a technique is outlined that can be used to minimize the effect of the moments in apparatus similar to that used in these experiments.
