Summary A theoretical mode is described for the representation of the vertical current structure in an off‐shore tidal stream. This consists of a thin layer above the ocean floor across which there is a rapid transition from laminar to turbulent flow conditions. Above this, the flow is parameterized by using a constant coefficient of eddy viscosity. With this vertical structure, consideration is given to the corresponding type of horizontal structure and detailed results are given for two particular cases. With an appropriate choice of parameters, the model is evaluated numerically and the results are compared with the type of current structure that has been observed in a tidal stream.
