Summary It is argued that the isotropic ratio of rubidium contamination in strontium analyses is not that of normal rubidium. This makes the usual method of removing such contamination from strontium data, using the normal rubidium isotopic ratio, invalid. A linear relationship between the measured mass ratios of 86/85 and 87/85 is derived for a contaminated strontium analysis. This relationship enables the rubidium isotopic ratio and the true Sr 87 /Sr 86 ratio to be determined directly.
