Summary Since its inception, the I.S.S. has provided raw data for body wave studies. This paper is about surface waves, and the absence of these data in the bulletins has highlighted for the author the time consuming difficulty of collecting the large amount of data which are now required for such studies, and the essential part which the I.S.S. has in the past played in providing data summaries. It is hoped that this study may persuade the successor to the ISS to publish surface wave data, and the author makes some suggestions as to the kind of data which may encourage the extension of this work.
