Summary Dispersion of Love waves propagating in a laterally heterogeneous layer lying over a homogeneous semi‐infinite medium has been studied. The shear wave velocity and the modulus of rigidity in the layer have been assumed to change linearly along the direction of propagation. The dispersion equation has been obtained from the condition of constructive interference. It is seen that the phase velocity of Love waves decreases or increases according to their direction of propagation along increasing or decreasing shear wave velocity and rigidity of the layer.
