Summary The motion caused by a source of finite extent, of an applied force and a double force in an elastic half‐space is obtained and compared with the motion caused by a point source. While in previous finite difference calculations for solid elastic media the source had to be located in the interior of a homogeneous region, the present scheme allows models in which the source is located on a surface, interface, or within a heterogeneous medium. Volume, line and surface sources are included.
