Summary Electric current systems in the ionosphere caused by the Sun and the Moon on geomagnetically quiet days have been deduced from geomagnetic data by various workers, particularly by Chapman. These current systems are briefly reviewed in this article and remaining questions and ways to solve them are discussed.
