Summary A range of synthetic samples of the magnetite‐ulvospinel series has been made by the usual sintering technique. These samples were subjected to oxidation, and subsequent annealing treatment in vacuum. Magnetic measurements and petrological observations were made at each stage in the treatment. It is concluded that the magnetic stability of the samples is greatly increased as a result of oxidation; the TRM also increases by a considerable amount. Some of the oxidized and annealed samples behave in an unusual manner in weak magnetic field experiments, and seem to show a novel kind of magnetic interaction.
