Summary A simple model of mid‐ocean ridge structure is developed from the hypothesis of ocean floor spreading using the most recent published information. This model accounts for the differences between the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge and the East Pacific Rise in a way consistent with the known features of other parts of the ridge system, and leads to conclusions about the form of the uprising currents in the mantle and the constitution of layer 3.
