Summary It is assumed that the mechanical properties of the mantle may be described in terms of dislocation behaviour and some of the consequences are examined. Geologically acceptable strain rates and a mantle attenuation characterized by a frequency dependent Q are found in this approach. Maxima are expected in the strain rate and attenuation with depth.
