Summary It was shown in an earlier paper (1929) that Love‐waves could be propagated over the free surface of a heterogeneous medium provided that the velocity of distortional waves increased initially with depth below the surface, and an asymptotic formula was developed for waves of short wave‐length. The present note extends the analysis to cover the case of a medium in which there is a depth at which the distortional wave‐velocity is a minimum; as a particular example the junction of a homogeneous with a heterogeneous medium is discussed. The transmission of sound‐waves through the sofar layer of the ocean may be similarly treated.
