Summary The theory of diffraction at a smooth interface explains the generation of Love waves fairly satisfactorily, but does not explain the existence of rapid oscillations after P and S or the length of the coda. These and some other phenomena seem to be explicable by irregularities of the base of the upper layers and possibly within these layers.
