Summary The current and proposed distributions of resources in seismology are discussed in relation to foreseeable world requirements. It is concluded that much more emphasis should be placed on the importance of finding good sites for teleseismic stations, and on the advantages of mobility in local studies. The potential contributions of international and regional research centres, and of a small number of very advanced recording stations are indicated. Ocean‐bottom recording is suggested as an alternative to conventional seismology for coastal and island research institutes.
