Summary Four of the most conspicuous lunar lineaments are examined in relation to surrounding topography and are found to be faults with maximum horizontal offsets of between 12 and 32 km. The analyses provide evidence of protracted growth of the faults and of periods of plasticity of the rocks, and the results support the hypothesis of a crustal meridional compression.
