Summary Although microseisms, the small earth tremors of period 4–10s and amplitude up to 10μ, have been studied for nearly eighty years, many of the results and conclusions obtained are still controversial. The controversy has been centred mainly round the work done in Britain and the United States. An attempt will be made in this article to give an account of the present position of the work in both countries and to suggest ways and means by which agreement can be reached.
