Summary On the basis of the study of the consolidation of clays made by Skempton (1944) and others, estimates have been made of the gravitational attraction of a deposit of clay. Examples of the behaviour of some typical clays are given and a procedure for correcting gravity anomalies for the attraction of a deposit of clay is suggested.
