§1. Summary The paper deals with the measurement of the second order derivatives of the gravitational potential over a buried anticline. During the early part of the work considerable instrumental difficulties were encountered. These were mostly caused by the rapid temperature fluctuations during the night in South‐west Persia, where the investigation was carried out. The magnitude and direction of the gravitational force due to the underground mass have been obtained at a number of points on the surface. The dimensions of the anticlinal mass, and approximate values for the densities of the two uppermost media, have been deduced from the measurements.
