All global genera of the fly family C onopidae are revised here. A cladistic analysis of 117 morphological characters recorded from 154 species, including representatives of 59 genera and subgenera, recovers a phylogenetic hypothesis for the family. This hypothesis is used as the basis of a new classification for the family. Both S icini and Z odionini are removed from M yopinae and elevated to subfamilial status. A new tribe, T hecophorini, is proposed within M yopinae to accommodate T hecophora , S catoccemyia , and P seudoconops . Two genera, P seudomyopa and P arazodion , are removed from D almanniinae and placed in M yopinae and Z odioninae, respectively. C onopinae is divided into 11 tribes, seven of which are newly described ( A siconopini, C aenoconopini, G yroconopini, M icroconopini, N eoconopini, and S iniconopini). Some examined species are transferred to different or new genera and subgenera. A new genus, S chedophysoconops gen. nov. , and subgenus A siconops ( Aegloconops ) subgen. nov. within C onopinae are described. A review of character evolution and phylogeography is included in light of the new classification. A catalogue of all genus‐group names is included with new emendations noted.
