Morphological and anatomical arguments are presented for recognizing one new genus, Celtica , and one previously described genus, Macrochloa , in the Stipeae . The species of both genera, each of which is now monotypic, were included by Kunth in his circumscription of Macrochloa. They are currently placed either in Stipa or Achnatherum , but are clearly distinct from both these genera, from each other and from all other genera of the tribe. The characteristics of both genera are reviewed and compared with other stipoid genera, particularly Stipa s.s. and Achnatherum . This is followed by a key to the stipoid genera of the western Mediterranean and formal presentation of the generic name Celtica plus combinations for its subspecies, including one newly described subspecies, C. gigantea ssp. sterilis F.
