The merits and applicability of CITES to the management of mahogany ( Swietenia macrophylla King) are assessed. Emphasis is placed on the necessity for trade regulation in order to encourage the sustainable management of S. macrophylla , including the protection of adequate population and genetic resources throughout its range.
