For obvious reasons, much emphasis in VR research to date has concerned the visual channel (see VR Reborn, IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, Nov. 1998). More recently, however, there has been an emphasis on turning VR into a truly multichannel, multimodal environment. The last half-decade has seen interesting advances in display technology, acoustics, haptics, locomotion, multimodal interaction, and even olfactory sensation. This panel will explore recent advances in display, acoustic, haptic, and locomotion technology for VR, focusing both on worldwide achievements and on the panelists' individual accomplishments.
