This paper presents important concepts and the main development phases within the Octopus/UML method; an object-oriented software development method specialised for embedded real-time systems. The Octopus/UML method addresses the specific needs of software projects for embedded real-time systems. Real-time systems are widely used in industrial, commercial and military areas. Octopus/UML, as the name suggests, encompasses the Unified Modeling Language (UML) as its main supporting notation. Octopus/UML is a practical development method based on feedback received from Nokia projects using the method and research in the areas of object orientation and real-time systems.
