Xerox has released two new printers, one ink jet and one laser. The color ink jet printer, the 4020, is targeted at the low end of the engineering/ scientific market, and is compatible with many business graphics software packages, including Digital Research's GEM family, Lotus 1-2-3, Symphony, ChartMaster, Wordstar 2000, and Microsoft Chart. The 4020 prints up to seven colors and more than 4000 shades. A typical color graphics page prints in about two minutes in the standard 120 X 120 dots-per-inch mode, and in about four minutes in the enhanced 240 x 120 dpi mode, according to the company. A 96-character ASCII set with 50 supplementarv characters is standard. The 4020 can be connected to the Xerox 6064 and 6065 PC, and virtuallv all other industry-standard PCs, via a Centronics parallel interface. An RS-232C serial interface is optional. The 4020 is $1495. The laser printer, the Xerox 4050, is intended for use in mid-sized data centers. It prints 50 pages a minute at 300 X 300 dpi, and comes with two 50M-bvte hard disk drives. It supports 250 type fonts, and can print logos, signatures, and shading. A varietv of interfaces is offered with the 4050, including an IBM 3811/3211 interface, an Ethernet LAN interface, and an interface with the higher-speed Xerox 8700 and 9700 laser printing systems.
