Edge Computer has introduced a highend workstation series, the Edgel family of super-minicomputers for scientific, engineering, and CAE/CAD/CAM applications. The Edgel systems feature Vax 8600class computational performance combined with 1280 X 1024 resolution and integrated graphics. The Edge I supercomputer architecture is implemented through 21 specially designed CMOS VLSI gate arrays: 10 in the CPU, seven in the floating-point accelerator, and four in the integrated graphics engine. The four new models are the 500M, a monochrome workstation; the 500C, a color workstation; the 500S, a network server; and the 5000, a multiuser Unix system. Workstation prices begin at $45,000 for fully functional configurations in OEM quantities of 100. An average color workstation includes a CPU with 8M bytes of main memory, real-time graphics accelerator with 19" display, keyboard with mouse, floatingpoint accelerator, seven-slot Multibus card cage, 165M-byte disk, streaming cartridge tape, floppy disk, Ethernet, and the Edge GSX Unix operating system. In OEM quantities this configuration is $63,000. Contact Edge Computer, 7273 E. Butherus, Scottsdale, AZ 85260; (602) 951-2020.
