The purpose of this tutorial is to identify some of the issues associated with the use of commercial off-theshelf (COTS) software in long-lived complex computer systems, and describe tools and techniques in acquiring, developing and managing such systems. The tutorial length is one half day. The lecturers' expertise spans a wide range of COTS software issues from research to component development to acquisition and management. The discussions will focus on the practical aspects of management and implementation of these systems. The course is applicable to researchers, developers and managers.
