Two new chalcones of general type (2 E )‐1‐(3‐hydroxyphenyl)‐3‐(4‐ R ‐phenyl)prop‐2‐en‐1‐one are reported, one where R = methyl, C 16 H 14 O 2 , in the present paper, and one where R = chloro, C 15 H 11 ClO 2 , in the following paper [Butcher, Jasinski, Narayana, Lakshmana & Yathirajan (2007). Acta Cryst. E 63 , o3661]. In both structures, the 3‐hydroxyphenyl and 4‐(methyl/chloro)phenyl groups are coplanar with each other and also with the propyl‐2‐ketone oxygen. Crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular O—H...O hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl H atom and the propyl‐2‐ketone O atom.
