The title compound, C 10 H 17 NO 6 , is an intermediate, with all the stereocentres in place, for a synthesis of a new class of glycosidase inhibitors with a branched carbon chain. Its relative configuration was determined by X‐ray crystallography and the absolute configuration by the use of l ‐sorbose as the starting material.
