The title compound, C 17 H 28 O 7 , was prepared from protected d ‐ glycero ‐ d ‐ gulo ‐heptono‐1,4‐lactone by tandem S N 2 displacements. The relative configuration of the crystal structure establishes that two stereocentres have been inverted; the absolute configuration was determined by the use of d ‐glucose as the starting material. There are three independent mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit ( Z ′=3).
