The title compound, C 12 H 12 Cl 3 NO 2 , is a purple chromophore with an absorption at 563 nm in acetone solution. The benzenoid ring in the structure exhibits strong quinoid‐like character. In the crystal structure, the molecules pack in alternating layers that are stabilized by close Cl⋯Cl intermolecular contacts.
