Section A of Acta Crystallographica publishes papers reporting fundamental advances in all areas of crystallography in the broadest sense. The central themes are, on the one hand, experimental and theoretical studies of the properties and arrangements of atoms, ions and molecules in condensed matter, ideal or real, and of their symmetry and, on the other, the theoretical and experimental aspects of the various methods to determine these arrangements. In contrast, Section B deals with the structures of individual compounds and families of compounds, and the relationship of structure to chemical and physical properties, Section C publishes crystal structure determinations and Section D is devoted to molecules of biological interest. A more complete de®nition of scienti®c scope is given in an Editorial [Acta Cryst. (1994), A50, 1].
