The antibiotic patiilin (I) has been reported to inhibit seed germination becauise of its toxicity (7). We considered that this butenolide (I) might induce light sensitive dormancy in seeds of lettuce because of its structural similarity to coumarin (II) and ramulosin (III), (see fig 1), which have been demonstrated to possess this biological activity (2,5,6). Possible activitv was tested in the following fashion. The desired amouint of patulin was loaded onto a 2.5 cm square of Whatman seed test paper,
