We examine the dependence of event rates at neutrino telescopes on theneutrino-nucleon cross section for neutrinos with energy above 1 PeV, andcontrast the results with those for cosmic ray experiments. Simple scaling ofthe Standard Model cross sections leaves the rates of upward events essentiallyunchanged. Details, such as detector depth and cross section inelasticity, caninfluence rates. Numerical estimates of upward shower, muon and tau event ratesin the IceCube detector confirm these results.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Version to appear in PR
