Magnetic dipole transitions in17C are investigated by shell model calculations. The important role of thetensor interaction for magnetic dipole transitions in this exotic neutron-rich nucleus is pointed out. The recentlyobserved anomalous quenching of the magnetic dipole transition in 1/2+1→3/2+g.s.is shown to be well explainedby using a modified shell model Hamiltonian that takes full account of the tensor force and monopole correctionsin the isospinT=1 channel. The predicted quadrupole moment of17C is smaller than the value obtained byconventional shell model Hamiltoniansstatus: publishe
