We prove that at low enough temperature all translationally invariantequilibrium states for the Ising ferromagnet are a superposition of onlytwo extremal states, i.e., the positively and negatively magnetized purephases. In particular this proves, at low temperature and in twodimensions, the identity of the spontaneous magnetization and the Onsager'svalue $M_0=(1-\sinh\b)^{\frac18}$
