An attempt is made to clarify the fundamental physical basis of the intrsic characteristics of unstable elementary particles and to replace the conventional, purely phenomenological, description in terms of decaying states and complex energy levels, by definitious which are consistent with general requirements of relativistic quantum mechanics like Hermiticity, unitarity, and causality.
