Three procedures for the anaerobic culture of clinical specimens are compared: (i) a conventional bench routine, (ii) a system whereby primary anaerobic plates were incubated for 48 h before examination, and (iii) an anaerobic chamber. It was shown that the anaerobic chamber was of no advantage over bench regimens when primary anaerobic plates were incubated for 48 h before being examined.
