The singular and ambiguous animal of which I have the honour to give the following description, lives in a small lake in Carniolia, called,Sitticher See . This country is celebrated for its lakes, and subterraneous caverns filled with water. One of its largest lakes is the famous lake of Czirknitz, which seems to be the source of all the others; at least there is no doubt that all of them have some connection with each other, by subterraneous, though still unexplored communications : this is ascertained by the repeated and reciprocal risings, and corresponding depressions of the water, in spring and autumn.
