It has recently been shown (11) that the Ophiuroidea may he divided into a group Protophiuroidea, including the Silurian and Devonian forms, and a group Euophiuroidea, including all the modern forms. The Euophiuroidea extend back into the Trias; considerable interest therefore attaches to the rare brittle-stars, which are all that remain to guide us in forming an idea of the group as it existed in the intervening period,i.e the Carboniferous. These are Onychaster Meek and Worthen,O. Baris , Meek and Worthen, andProtaster gregarius , Meek and Worthen (=Aganaster greaius , Miller and Gurley =Ophiopege gregarius , Böhm). It is with the first-mentioned that we are chiefly concerned at present.
