It has been shown by the late Dr. A. Matthiessen, in conjunction with the writer, that when codeia is heated with a large excess of strong hydrochloric acid the following reactions successively take place :— Codeia. C18 H21 NO3 + HCl = H2 O + C18 H20 Cl NO2 . Chlorocodide. Chlorocodide. C18 H20 Cl NO2 = CH3 Cl + C17 H17 NO2 . Apomorphia.
