The osmotic pressure determinations for dialysed hæmoglobin made by previous workers ranged from 3·5 mm. to 12·1 mm. per 1 per cent. of protein. Variation is to be expected, for it is theoretically impossible to prepare a hæmoglobin solution absolutely free from combined acids or bases, and there is the further risk that prolonged purification may cause changes in the protein.
