In a previous paper on the transmutation of the elements by protons we reported some measurements of the disintegration function for thin films and for thick films of the element lithium, and gave the results of observations of the effects produced by molecular ions. In this communication we shall deal with the ranges of the particles emitted from lithium when bombarded by protons, and we shall also report the results obtained when that element is bombarded by ions of the heavy isotope of hydrogen. The apparatus was described fully in the previous paper, and with the exception of changes in the windows which allow the particles produced to enter the counting chamber remains as before.
