Suppose a contingency-table to have been formed for two characters A and B which have been assigned in some way into classes A1 ...Ar , B1 ...Bs , the table havingr columns,s rows, and giving the frequencies of occurrence of all combinations like Am Bn . Let (Am ) (Bn ) denote the frequencies of Am and Bn (Am Bn ) the frequency of their combination. Extract from the general contingency-table any four adjacent frequencies, say— (Am Bn ), (Am + 1Bn ) (Am Bn +1), (Am + 1Bn + 1).
