In the following paragraphs I summarise the principal objects for which this expedition was undertaken:— (1) To obtain large scale images of the flash spectrum with a prismatic camera of great focal length, for the purpose of studying the actual forms assumed by the different radiating gases, and to obtain evidence regarding the probably eruptive nature of the gases giving the enhanced lines. (2) To obtain ultra-violet spectra of the corona with prismatic cameras of glass and of quartz, using the flash-spectrum arcs as reference lines for determining wave-lengths. (3) To study the corona spectrum in the D—F region with high dispersion, visually and by means of photographs, to ascertain the character of the continuous spectrum and of the radiation atλ 5303.
