Douglas Everett made major contributions to the study of thermodynamics, and in particular to acid-base equilibria, porous media, physical adsorption of gases on solids, adsorption from solution and colloid stabilization. He was also instrumental in setting up in Bristol University a highly acclaimed Research School in Surface and Colloid Science.
