Samuel Crowe Curran was born in Balleymena on 23 May 1912, where his mother had gone to her ancestral home just a few weeks before so that Sam could be born in Northern Ireland. Soon afterwards she returned with him to her husband and family in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where Sam was to spend the remainder of his childhood and youth. He was essentially in speech and outlook a man of the West of Scotland.
