Sturz & Bodily [1] propose an alternative interpretationfor the results presented by Kelly et al. [2], whotrained pigeons and chicks in a rectangular environmentto find food located in one of two geometricallyidentical corners. Once the birds were locating thefood accurately, they were presented with a novelL-shaped arena. The L-shaped arena provides uniquepredictions of search behaviour for principal axis-,medial axis- and local geometry-based strategies. Thepatterns of search behaviour reported support thatpigeons were showing primary reliance on the medialaxis, whereas chicks showed a primary reliance onlocal geometrical cues with a secondary reliance onthe medial axis
