Lipid emulsions are used in paediatric parenteral nutrition (PN) as a non-carbohydrate source of energy in a low volume and with low osmolarity. In addition they provide essential fatty acids. The use of lipid emulsions decreases CO2 production compared with parenteral nutrition containing a high carbohydrate content (1–3). Net-nitrogen balance can be improved by the addition of lipid emulsions to PN solutions (1,4,5).
